Capabilities / Research and evidence
We develop research and analytical methods for understanding the built environment. Every method is editioned, linked to its evidence, and challenged through successive rounds with stakeholders and subject-matter experts.
Research standards
We make the development and review of methods part of the evidence behind a finding.
Each method has a distinct edition. Its provenance chain records the source materials, transformations, analytical decisions, and outputs. When a method changes, the new edition and the reason for the change can be compared with what came before.
Methods go through successive rounds of challenge with stakeholders and subject-matter experts. Questions, feedback, revisions, and remaining limitations inform the work before findings are published.

See which method was used, what changed between editions, and why.
Use multiple review rounds to test assumptions with people who bring relevant expertise and local knowledge.
Evidence across places
Built-environment evidence spans buildings, climate, policy, and everyday life.
We bring earth observation, building information, scientific research, policy, and local knowledge together to understand how places change. City foundation models are one developing way to connect these sources and reveal patterns across a particular city.
Our global and country-level indicators provide comparable evidence across jurisdictions. For both, the sources, methods, assumptions, and limits matter as much as the result.
Explore MariposaExperimental / Kitchener–Waterloo
Mariposa is our experimental city foundation model, grounded in Kitchener–Waterloo.
It gives us a place to explore how locally designed evidence can connect buildings, environment, and everyday life. Its methods and findings remain part of an ongoing research effort.

Our internal research systems help analysts organize knowledge, develop methods, and preserve evidence and version history. They support the work; the published research is judged by its sources, methods, and review.
Our building-energy platform combines building observations, energy analysis, and neighbourhood evidence to identify retrofit opportunities and inform programme design. It supports decisions from individual buildings to city-wide programmes, with evidence and assumptions clearly in view.
